Vaiśampāyana said: The inhabitants of Khāṇḍava were frightened at the fall of the mountain—dānava-s, rākṣasa-s, serpents, hyenas, bears, elephants in rut, tigers, lions with manes
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: खाण्डव के निवासी पर्वत के गिरने से भयभीत हो गए थे - दानव, राक्षस, साँप, लकड़बग्घे, भालू, हाथी, बाघ, जटाधारी शेर
deer, buffaloes, hundreds of birds and other forest-dwellers. In great alarm, they and many other beings slithered away.
हिरण, भैंस, सैकड़ों पक्षी और अन्य वनवासी। बड़ी घबराहट में, वे और कई अन्य प्राणी दूर खिसक गए।
They saw the raging fire and the two Kṛṣṇās, their weapons ready and the terrible roar scared them.

Janārdana let fly his cakra, radiant with its own energy, and small creatures, dānava-s and niśācara-s were instantly cut down in hundreds and hurled into the fire.

कृष्ण के चक्र से क्षत-विक्षत और चर्बी तथा रक्त से लथपथ राक्षस तब गोधूलि बादलों के समान प्रतीत होते थे।

All the assembled gods and dānava-s could not vanquish Kṛṣṇā and Pāṇḍava in battle.

Nor could the gods save the forest with their strength or quench the fire, so they retreated.
न ही देवता अपनी शक्ति से जंगल बचा सकते थे या आग बुझा सकते थे, इसलिए वे पीछे हट गये।
On seeing how the masses of gods had been turned away, Śatakratu was extremely pleased and praised Kṛṣṇā and Pāṇḍava.
यह देखकर कि किस प्रकार देवताओं की भीड़ को दूर कर दिया गया, शतक्रतु अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने कृष्ण और पांडव की प्रशंसा की।
When the gods were repulsed, a disembodied voice spoke to Śatakratu in a loud and deep tone.
जब देवताओं को तिरस्कृत किया गया, तो एक अशरीरी आवाज ने शतक्रतु से ऊंचे और गहरे स्वर में बात की।

"Your friend Takṣaka, supreme among serpents, is not here. At the time of Khāṇḍava's burning, he had gone to Kurukṣetra.
"तुम्हारा मित्र तक्षक, जो नागों में श्रेष्ठ है, यहाँ नहीं है। खाण्डव के जलने के समय, वह कुरूक्षेत्र गया था।

न च शक्यौ त्वया जेतुं युद्धेऽस्मिन्समवस्थितौ वासुदेवार्जुनौ शक्र निबोधेदं वचो मम
O Śākra! Listen to my words. You cannot defeat Vāsudeva and Arjuna when they are steadfast in battle.
हे शक्र! मेरी बात सुनो. जब वासुदेव और अर्जुन युद्ध में दृढ़ हैं तो आप उन्हें हरा नहीं सकते।
They are the gods Nara and Nārāyaṇa, famous in heaven. You yourself know their bravery and their valour.
वे स्वर्ग में प्रसिद्ध देवता नर और नारायण हैं। आप स्वयं उनकी वीरता और उनकी वीरता को जानते हैं।
These two supreme and ancient sages are invincible in battle and cannot be conquered in any of the worlds.
ये दोनों सर्वोच्च और प्राचीन ऋषि युद्ध में अजेय हैं और इन्हें किसी भी लोक में जीता नहीं जा सकता।
They deserve the worship of all the gods, āsura-s, yakṣa-s, rakṣas, gāndharva-s, humans, kinnara-s and serpents.
वे सभी देवताओं, असुरों, यक्षों, राक्षसों, गंधर्वों, मनुष्यों, किन्नरों और नागों की पूजा के पात्र हैं।
O, Vāsava! Therefore, depart from here with the gods. The destruction of Khāṇḍava is destined."
हे वासव! अत: तुम देवताओं के साथ यहाँ से प्रस्थान करो। खाण्डव का विनाश निश्चित है।"
Having heard these words and knowing them to be true, the lord of the immortals gave up his anger and jealousy and returned to heaven.
इन शब्दों को सुनकर और उन्हें सच जानकर, अमरों के स्वामी ने अपना क्रोध और ईर्ष्या छोड़ दी और स्वर्ग लौट आए।
O king! On seeing the great-souled Śatakratu leave, all the other dwellers of heaven also departed.
हे राजा! महामहिम शतक्रतु को जाते देख स्वर्ग के अन्य सभी निवासी भी चले गये।
When the two warriors, Vāsudeva and Arjuna, saw the king of the gods leave with the other gods, they roared like lions.
जब दो योद्धाओं वासुदेव और अर्जुन ने देवताओं के राजा को अन्य देवताओं के साथ जाते देखा, तो वे शेरों की तरह दहाड़ने लगे।

O king! Kṛṣṇā and Pāṇḍava were delighted that the king of the gods had left. Fearlessly, they continued with burning the forest.
हे राजा! कृष्ण और पांडव प्रसन्न थे कि देवताओं के राजा चले गए। वे निडर होकर जंगल जलाते रहे।
Having vanquished the gods the way the wind scatters the clouds, Arjuna used showers of arrows to kill the beings who lived in Khāṇḍava.
जिस प्रकार हवा बादलों को तितर-बितर कर देती है, उसी प्रकार देवताओं को परास्त करके अर्जुन ने खाण्डव में रहने वाले प्राणियों को मारने के लिए बाणों की वर्षा की।

Not a single being could escape from there, they were cut down by Savyasachi's arrows.
वहाँ से एक भी प्राणी बच नहीं सका, वे सव्यसाची के बाणों से कट गये।
Even the greatest of beings could not look upon the invincible Arjuna in battle, not to speak of engaging him in a fight.
यहां तक कि सबसे महान प्राणी भी युद्ध में अजेय अर्जुन को देख नहीं सकते थे, उन्हें युद्ध में शामिल करने की बात तो दूर की बात है।
Like the god of death himself, he pierced one with a hundred arrows and a hundred with one, and dead, they descended into the flames.

The heat increased and thousands of herds of beings cried out loudly in pain. Elephants, deer and birds cried out and the sound scared those who lived in the Gāṅga and the ocean.
गर्मी बढ़ गई और हजारों प्राणियों के झुंड दर्द से जोर-जोर से चिल्लाने लगे। हाथी, हिरण और पक्षी चिल्लाने लगे और इसकी आवाज से गंगा और समुद्र में रहने वाले लोग डर गए।

किसी ने भी महाबाहु अर्जुन और अत्यंत बलशाली कृष्ण की ओर देखने का साहस नहीं किया, उनसे युद्ध करना तो दूर की बात है।
With his cakra, Harī slew rākṣasa-s, dānava-s and nāga-s and those who ventured along solitary paths.
अपने चक्र से, हरि ने राक्षसों, दानवों और नागों तथा एकान्त पथ पर जाने वाले लोगों को मार डाला।

Aided by the flesh, torrents of blood and fat, the flames rose up into the sky, without a trace of smoke.
मांस, खून और चर्बी की धार की सहायता से, आग की लपटें बिना किसी धुएं के, आकाश की ओर उठीं।
Agni's eyes blazed, his tongue blazed and his wide-open mouth also blazed. The hair stood up, drinking up the fat of life, the eyes were tawny.
अग्नि की आंखें जल गईं, जीभ जल गई और उसका खुला मुंह भी जल गया। बाल खड़े थे, जीवन की चर्बी पी रहे थे, आँखें सजल थीं।
The fire fed on the nectar that Kṛṣṇā and Arjuna had provided and was extremely happy, satiated and contented.
अग्नि ने कृष्ण और अर्जुन द्वारा प्रदान किए गए अमृत को पी लिया और अत्यंत खुश, तृप्त और संतुष्ट थी।

अथासुरं मयं नाम तक्षकस्य निवेशनात् विप्रद्रवन्तं सहसा ददर्श मधुसूदनः
Then Madhusūdana saw an āsura named Māyā suddenly attempting to escape from Takṣaka's abode.
तभी मधुसूदन ने माया नाम के एक असुर को अचानक तक्षक के निवास से भागने का प्रयास करते देखा।
The fire's charioteer was the wind and assuming the form of a hermit with matted hair and roaring like clouds, he pursued him with the intention of consuming him. Vāsudeva stood with his cakra raised, ready to kill.
अग्नि का सारथी वायु था और उसने उलझे बालों वाले और बादलों की तरह गर्जना करते हुए एक साधु का रूप धारण किया और उसे भस्म करने के इरादे से उसका पीछा किया। वासुदेव अपना चक्र उठाए खड़े थे, मारने के लिए तैयार।

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On seeing the raised cakra and the fire ready to consume him, Māyā cried out, "O Arjuna! Save me."
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उठे हुए चक्र और उसे भस्म करने के लिए तैयार आग को देखकर, माया चिल्लाई, "हे अर्जुन! मुझे बचाओ।"

तस्य भीतस्वनं श्रुत्वा मा भैरिति धनंजयः प्रत्युवाच मयं पार्थो जीवयन्निव भारत
Hearing these scared words, Arjuna replied, "Do not be frightened." O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Pārtha's words seemed to instil new life into Māyā.
ये डरे हुए शब्द सुनकर अर्जुन ने उत्तर दिया, "डरो मत।" हे भरत वंश के वंशज! पार्थ के शब्दों से माया में नवजीवन का संचार होता प्रतीत हुआ।

तं पार्थेनाभये दत्ते नमुचेर्भ्रातरं मयम् न हन्तुमैच्छद्दाशार्हः पावको न ददाह च
Māyā was Namuci's brother. When Pārtha told Māyā he need not fear, Dāśārha no longer desired to kill him and the fire did not burn him either.
माया नमुसी का भाई था। जब पार्थ ने माया से कहा कि उसे डरने की जरूरत नहीं है, तो दशार्ह अब उसे मारना नहीं चाहता था और आग ने भी उसे नहीं जलाया।
In that flaming forest, Agni did not burn six beings — Aśvasena, Māyā and the four Śārṅgaka-s.
उस जलते हुए जंगल में, अग्नि ने छह प्राणियों - अश्वसेन, माया और चार शारंगकों को नहीं जलाया।
